If your goal is an authentic wildlife experience, then you need to choose your trip and your travel supplier carefully.  You want to be sure your trip was designed specifically with finding and viewing wildlife in mind, above everything else.  You are there for the experience, not the thread count!

Here are some of the key factors to look for:

Timing – You want to be in the right place at the right time. While you can see bears throughout the primary tourist season in Alaska, there is a specific time of year and location if you hope to see bears scooping salmon out of a river. The same goes for seeing baby penguins in Antarctica.

Size – Smaller is better for the group size, accommodations, and transportation. The less disturbance you make in the environment, the better chance you won’t scare wildlife away. In properly managed locations, wildlife is not fearful of humans which allows for close interaction.

One of the most memorable wildlife encounters I’ve had was in Magadalena Bay with Lindblad Expeditions. Within their lifetime, the gray whales here were hunted. So it’s amazing they are eager to interact with humans now.

Expert Guides–  You want experienced guides familiar with the area and the behavior of the local wildlife, as they will know where to go, and can read the physical and environmental clues. Some guides in Africa are very well known and sought after by the many companies who plan custom touring, so you need to plan ahead to hire them for your trip.

Flexibility  – Wildlife does not appear on schedule. Even when you’re in the right place, you often have to wait for the wildlife to show up. Or you have to be able to quickly move to where the wildlife is spotted. So don’t be alarmed if your travel itinerary doesn’t appear to have a lot of structure.  You need to have patience, but with that comes great rewards.

Remote Location– It makes sense that there is more pristine wildlife viewing when there are fewer people, so find a supplier who has exclusive permits or access to private land. The best Africa safari experiences are on private concessions instead of in the national parks.

Sustainability– It’s critical that tourism does not adversely impact the environment or the behavior of animals in order to preserve both. Most of the top suppliers in the industry have a solid reputation as good stewards of their destinations, but do a little research to be sure. You want to be sure your tourism dollars are helping, not harming.

The best wildlife trips that incorporate all these elements:

Expedition cruises – Companies like Lindblad Expeditions and Aqua Expeditions have ships designed for this purpose, with only 30-100 passsengers that can get into remote locations, and launch zodiacs and kayaks to provide close-up experiences in very small groups.

Small group escorted wildlife tours – A great example is Natural Habitat Adventures, with a group size averaging only 9 people.  Their polar bear excursions in Canada are outfitted with vehicles and lodging designed specifically for the environment.

Private wildlife tours– This is the ultimate wildlife experience catered to your special interests and abilities. They can even take you off the beaten path in popular tourist areas like national parks.  (You can book many Nat Hab trips as a private tour at little to no extra cost, depending on your group size!) Booking a private car and guide in Africa offers a richer safari experience than the group game drives.

Bison in Vermejo Park Ranch

Looks like Yellowstone but it’s Vermejo Ranch in New Mexico! It’s larger than most national parks, and has its own herd of bison.

If you are traveling independently and want a great wildlife experience, splurge by booking a private tour with an expert guide. This is also ideal for photographers, as they can guide you to the wildlife, and you don’t have to jostle for position with other tourists.

In Bora Bora we booked a private snorkeling tour. The guide asked us what we wanted to see, and drove the speedboat to the perfect location. We visited five sites including this manta ray “cleaning station.”

Think you can find everything you need to know to plan a great trip on the internet?

I just watched a flurry of emails go back and forth between several of my associates at Brownell Travel. One advisor had a question about planning a trip to Patagonia, so she sent out a request for more information. She immediately received replies from other advisors who had either been there recently, or were currently planning trips for their own clients or themselves. (Sometimes we get a reply from an advisor who is currently at a destination – can’t get any more up to date than that!) Patagonia has recently been affected by volcanoes & fires, so the advisor wanted to know about airport and hotel closures. One airport is closed for a few months, and while another has re-opened, an advisor warned her that some airlines were refusing to fly into it. The airline, however, was still allowing travelers to book flights there, without disclosing that they would be landing at an alternate airport and then have to take a 3-6 hr bus ride!

Fortunately, the travel suppliers we work with knew about all this and forwarded the information on so our clients would not have any unpleasant surprises.

This is a great example of how a travel advisor can save you time, money, and stress, especially when traveling to a remote or exotic destination. There is a wealth of information on the internet, but why waste time trying to sort out what is up to date and relevant? We go directly to our local partners in a destination to make sure we have the most current and accurate information, as well as insider tips to minimize hassles and create a one-of-a-kind experience. And should anything go wrong while our clients are traveling, we know they are in good hands with local contacts who know how to quickly and efficiently come to the rescue.
Your time is valuable, and your vacation time is especially precious. So think twice about relying on the internet to tell you everything you need to know to plan a smooth and hassle-free trip. The most valuable information is often not out there for the general public, you have to talk to someone “in the know” – your trusted travel advisor.

This weekend I attended Brownell Travel’s annual sales meeting in Atlanta. I spent an intensive two days meeting with travel suppliers from all over the world to find out the latest news for families. Here is my top ten list from the weekend:

1. Ireland is an amazing value right now due to their struggling economy. Families can have an affordable European vacation while at the same time helping a country in need. There are activities to please all ages, from fishing & falconry to castle and farm visits, and family-friendly accommodations, including connecting rooms, are the norm.

2. The Mansion on Peachtree, a Rosewood hotel in Atlanta, is offering “Elf on the Shelf” packages over the holiday, and guests of all ages can join the search for the elusive little elf. A whimsical tea service will feature a book reading and signing by the authors.

3. The lodges run by explora in Patagonia and Atacama not only welcome kids, they offer family rooms. With all meals, excursions, drinks and transfers included, it’s an easy way to visit some of the most dramatic and remote areas on the planet.

4. Brendan Vacations has added four new family trips, including “Monkeys, Jungles, and Volcanoes” in Costa Rica and “Trails of Liberty” in the eastern US. Designed for all ages, the family trips include rooms that sleep four, and kid-friendly activities such as making a chocolate bar at the Hershey factory.

5. A ski butler at the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch makes getting on & off the slopes with kids easier. When you’re ready to hit the slopes, your equipment will be ready and warm. And at the end of the day, there is no need to go back to room before heading out for a meal or another activity. They also have a hot chocolate sommelier!

6. Crystal Cruises’ Family Memories program provides special amenities with a minimum of only 3 cabins booked together, including prepaid gratuities, shipboard credits, and a family photo. And children under 17 are free when sharing a cabin with two adults.

7. Sardinia is easy to visit being only an hour flight from Rome or Milan. With gorgeous beaches and a Mediterranean feel, it is a relaxing way to wrap up a tour of Italy, especially when traveling with kids.

8. Alnwick Castle, which portrayed Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, is 3 hours by train from London, a reasonable day trip for fans. The current home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, it offers fun activities for kids including knight training and Dragon’s Quest.

9. The iconic Hotel Cipriani in Venice has introduced “The Smile Club,” a complimentary program for children ages 4-12 to play and experience Italian culture, leaving parents free to go sightseeing or just relax. Activities include traditional Venetian arts & crafts, pizza-making, treasures hunts, and fruit-picking, and even mini-manicures.

10. Viviani Wine Country Specialists can craft a family itinerary for all ages in Napa & Sonoma, from a private safari (yes, a safari in California!), to kayaking and cycling, to sailing on San Francisco Bay where kids can try their hand as captain.

This just scratches the surface of the information I received this weekend. Over the next few weeks I’ll write in more in-depth about specific suppliers & destinations. In the meantime, if you’d like help with planning the family vacation of your dreams, contact me at suzette@family-treks.com.
